14 Feb Wake Me Up When September (14th) Ends !!!
So Julia Gillard on January 30 has called an election for September 14th, which makes it one of Australia’s longest election campaigns or is it…????. Since the announcement we have already seen: –
- the arrest & criminal charges laid against Craig Thomson
- the ICAC scandal engulfing the NSW Labor right in State Politics
- the Minerals Rent Resources Tax (MRRT) raise $126m well below expectations & rumours of further budget cuts coming
- further speculation about further rule changes & tax hikes for superannuation
- A 2010 $16 million Federal Labor commitment to stem the shortage of maths and science teachers by fast-tracking bankers, accountants and engineers into classrooms has seen just 14 participants recruited.
- An exceedingly poor polling survey taking Labor’s primary vote back to rock bottom levels
The Bookies have the Coalition as very short price favourites at present ($1.15 vs Labor’s $5.00), so all the money is on the Liberals. History is on the punters side here as well with virtually all short price political favourites in Federal Politics winning. Perhaps Julia needs to call in that noted American Statistician/Sabermatrician/Soothsayer Nate Silver & get him to cast his eye over her numbers – for those of you who don’t know Silver in the 2012 US Presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, correctly predicted the winner of all 50 states and the District of Columbia stating that Obama would win comfortably (when the polls showed it as being neck & neck). On top of this he also predicted U.S. Senate races correctly in 31 of 33 states.
& NOW TO TOP IT ALL OFF the resurrection of Kevin 07, 247, 24/7 – whatever his moniker is nowadays. Kevin 24/7 is now back on his weekly sunrise gig (getting the band back together with Joe Hockey – Thanks Tony Burke for holding the fort). As well as this Kev is all across twitter, Facebook, instagram, you name it Kevin 24/7 is there.
Old Kevin 24/7 is just reminding his fellow MP’s that he is still around & using social media to once again remind his colleagues in an indirect way that he is very popular, that there is a lot of support for him across the general population and that he would be able to do better at an election than Julia Gillard Of the 20 videos uploaded this year to Kev 24/7′s YouTube channel – a key part of his 2007 publicity campaign – 15 have come since the election announcement, racking up more than 10,000 views.
Don’t be surprised if we see further poor polling figures come in the next survey that Kevin 24/7 & his army of followers mount a challenge for the Labor leadership (current speculation is this could happen in March). If this happens you can expect mass resignations from the Labor front bench (Wayne Swan, Peter Garrett – exit stage left) & I would expect that Kevin 24/7 would then call a snap election to hit the ground running. So whilst September seems a fair way away, don’t be surprised if the election comes early or in the immortal words of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong – Summer has come & past, the innocent can never last, wake me up when September (14th) ENDS !!!!!
